The test results showed that among public high school students, misconceptions concerning some of the basic elementary level number skills are widespread and persistent. Most students either failed to understand the given information well enough to develop a strategy, or they set up a strategy which was inappropriate to answering the given question. The recommendations given are as follows: remedial teaching, formative teaching in the classroom, correct misconceptions in textbooks, and subject-specific pedagogy, meaning teaching approaches in the key concepts of subjects. This book is based on courses designed for the use of elementary school teacher training institutions developed by the Mathematics Education Staff for Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia. It is composed of three units that focus on problem solving number theory, and space and measurement.

SOURCEBOOKS ON PRACTICAL WORK

The sourcebooks are intended for preservice and inservice training in mathematics at the elementary and secondary levels. They also provide a rich source of ideas and materials for classroom teaching. The books are products of a series of training programs conducted by the UP NISMED which focused on the use of practical work – a hands-on, minds-on and hearts-on teaching strategy.

This book traces the development of Philippine science and mathematics education and its changing roles in pursuit of national goals from 1898 to 1998. Significant events and contributions, including anecdotal records, at the basic and teacher education level, are presented.

The book presents the century in four quarters as follow:

  1. Science and Mathematics education under American rule
  2. Vocation-oriented science and mathematics education
  3. Science and mathematics education reforms
  4. Institutionalizing science and mathematics education program
This sourcebook for science and mathematics teachers contains the lectures of scientists and mathematicians in the country delivered  in the Frontiers in Science Lecture Series for Teachers, a project sponsored by the UP NISMED and initially, by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science (PHILAAS). The lectures were partly funded by the Science Education Institute-Department of Science and Technology (DOST-SEI). The main purpose of this ourcebook is to disseminate the outputs of the lecture series, especially to those who were not able to attend the lectures. It includes the following topics: The Physics of Turbulence; Lasers: How They Work and Their Application in LIDAR; Geology and Resource Development in the Philippines; The Philippines as a Jigsaw Puzzle from a Geological Perspective; Cyanobacterial Biotechnology; Peptides from Deadly Marine Snails; Trends in Computers and Communications Technologies; and Euclidean Geometry and Beyond.

This book is a collection of papers written by the UP NISMED for the National Science and Mathematics Education (SME) Congress held on November 28-29, 1999 and sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). The papers deal with materials and methods used in basic education and in-service teacher training in the Philippines in 1960-1998. The papers historically traced how science and mathematics education in the Philippines progressed and changed to cope with international trends and standards and local needs and conditions. Volume 2

This resource is a collection of stories that integrate science or mathematics concepts in a Philippine cultural context. Written for children, ages 6 to 12, the stories can also be used to supplement lessons in Science and Mathematics in Grades II to IV. Among the topics and concepts covered in the stories are number of legs of animals and counting by two’s, how crickets produce chirping sounds, flies as carriers of disease, behavior of sea turtles, solar eclipse, and how a pulley works. Each story is fully illustrated and has an English and a Filipino text.

This resource consists of teaching and learning materials on selected folk and common toys and games. The toys and games are selected based on their popularity, availability in the locality and cost. Each lesson includes the following: playing with the toy, making the toy, curriculum entry point, suggested activities, and scientific or mathematical explanation.  The concepts and skills developed are in consonance with the Philippine Elementary Learning Competencies (PELC) and the Desired Learning Competencies (DLC). Illustrations make the lessons more understandable. This volume is a compilation of cases that are problem-based narratives of authentic teacher training and classroom situations. Each chapter of this casebook consists of a case narrative, questions for reflection and discussion and the response(s) from science and mathematics teacher educators. The first seven cases deal with teacher training situations; and the last three, to classroom issues.

WELS: Words in Elementary School Science and Mathematics

The book presents papers read at the International Conference on Science, Mathematics, and Technology Literacy: Strategies for the 21st Century held on 22-24 November 1999 at the UP NISMED. The papers dealt with the subthemes of: Practical Work Approaches; Cases, Toys and Stories; ICT; Student Learning and Assessment; Teacher Education and Training Programs; and Distance and Nonformal Education.

This book is based on the result of a study to investigate the elementary school children’s knowledge of English non-technical words used in teacher-pupil interactions and mathematics classes. The facility of each of the 385 non-technical words in the WELS World List for each grade level (grades 4, 5 and 6) by regions (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) and by school types (public barrio, town, and private) was determined.

The report includes the test developed to measure the difficulty levels of each word. The discussion and the implications of the findings for teaching and curriculum development highlight the significance of the study in relation to the goals of science and mathematics education.
